Brown accuses oil firms of opposing Prop 14 drive

Gov Brown told reporters at the Los Angeles Press Club that major oil companies including Getty Oil Standard Oil and Union Oil seek to obstruct Prop 14 by promoting secret farm labor elections. He warned such corporate pressure aims to keep the Legislature off balance and push the farm labor issue. In Sacramento both sides rallied around Prop 14 as Brown said passing it would stabilize farm labor boards for two years and free the issue from politics while noting possible further fights if defeated. Brown dodged a quick answer on presidential plans, saying he might retire to a monastery after four years as governor.
