Navy trains porpoises to deter sharks for divers
Navy researchers at Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida trained a 440 pound bottlenose dolphin named Simo to respond to underwater signals and drive away a seven foot brown shark in a controlled pool. The program aims to provide protective aid for divers and rescue personnel in shark infested waters. The work underscores porpoises intelligence and previously demonstrated abilities to carry tools and messages and locate lost equipment.
