Freeway Crash Involves Five Injured In tanker overturn
Five people were injured Sunday on the Golden State Freeway after a tanker truck swerved to avoid collisions and overturned. Abel Carcega 19 of Montebello drove a car that struck the divider and stalled in the fast lane. Barry Waters 23 of Panorama City drove the empty tanker that overturned. Carcega and Waters were in serious condition. three passengers in the other car suffered various injuries.

Three Hurt in Five City Car Chase Ends in Crash
An 18 year old Long Beach man, John Hopwood of 6315 Cherry Ave, was hospitalized with moderate injuries after a five city pursuit by deputies ended when his car collided with a second vehicle on the Artesia Freeway Cherry Avenue offramp. Hopwood is jailed on grand theft auto and reckless driving charges. The other driver Thomas Nebrett, 25, and passenger Barbara Convey, 25, both from Lakewood and Long Beach, were treated and released for minor injuries.

A 20 year old Downey resident, Kevin Richards, died at the scene after an out of control vehicle jumped the center divider on Imperial Highway near the San Gabriel River bridge and struck his car in Norwalk at 2 25 a m The other driver, 36 year old Robert Gawlick of Santa Fe Springs, was booked on suspicion of manslaughter.

Fire kills infant and injures three siblings in Los Angeles home
An 11 month old girl Talisha Lynch died and three other children were injured in a South Los Angeles house fire at 359 East 73rd Street. Firemen freed the mother Wanda Lynch and two unharmed children after neighbors pried away exterior security bars. The father Willie Lynch was at work. the fire caused about 15000 dollars in damage and the cause was undetermined.

Ten inmates remain at large after Fresno jail escape
Ten felony prisoners were still at large Sunday after an 18 man break from the Fresno county jail. Seven were recaptured within hours. Sheriff Harold McKinney called the jail a crackerbox built 34 years ago and noted it was the third escape since July. Inmates pried open a fourth floor vent and followed the leader.

Revived Long Beach Woman Improves After Near Death
A 36 year old Long Beach woman, Mabel Samuels of 19 West Adams Street, was found dead in her home Friday after an apparent overdose. Police revived her with a respirator at Valley Hospital, and she remains in good condition though full details and current dependency on life support are not released. The deputy coroner opened a routine inquiry and saw signs of life during photographing.

Nine Held Captive in Los Angeles Home
A 25 year old North Hollywood man with a gun held nine people including six sleeping children in a Los Angeles house for about two hours early Sunday. Police end the standoff by entering the home and arresting Douglas Call without a struggle. Three captives escaped earlier. no one was hurt. Call, intoxicated and emotionally disturbed, became argumentative and waved a pistol after midnight.
