West German Guards to Patrol Abroad to Counter Airline Hijacks
Government officials said a plan to form armed guards patrolling commercial Lufthansa flights abroad was under discussion with Lufthansa and pilots groups. State Secretary Ruhnau noted 1000 to 150 unarmed border guards already protected Lufthansa passengers at 40 airports with armed local support. The hijacking of a Lufthansa 737 at Palma de Mallorca highlighted security concerns as Baader Meinhof members and associates faced prison conditions and renewed prisoner tensions at Stammheim. In Stuttgart locals debated burying Baader Baslin and Raspe, while flareups continued as authorities tracked nine of 16 terrorists linked to Schleyer’s kidnapping in Mulhouse, France.
