Say Russ on Mission to Peking
Say Russ on Mission to Peking guards or mnournes at the Red Square funeral of Mar shal Sergei S. Biryuzov, the chief of staff and deputy de fense minister who was 'eaten in a plane crash in Yugoslavia, Manuay'. Suslov, ), has not ap peared in robust health lately, causing some forces to sug gest illness might account for his absence. But an assignment to try to smooth over relations be tween Mao Tze-tung's re gime and Nikita Khrushchev's successors would be in keep ing with Suslow's background. There is still some question whether he was a trusted lieutenant or a tolerated rival of Khrushchev, who lost the party leadership to Leonid Breghmev and the premiership to Alexei Kosygin Oct. 14. A COMMUNIST for all but 16 of his 61 years, Suslov conducted provincial purges for Stalin in 1933. He was en trusted with the task of reestablishing Soviet authority in Lithuania in 1944. He com muted between Moscow Warsaw and Budapest during the Polish and Hungarian crisis of 1956. We headed the Soviet team that discussed 9 Communist] ideological problems-chiefly Peking's hard line vs. Khrusi chev's advocacy of coexist ence-with a Chinese delega tion in Moscow in the sum mer of 1963

Charge on Clearances Deny Barry's Claims
A State Department spokesman rejected Barry Goldwater's claim that 150 employees lacked proper security checks before handling secrets. Officials said those 150 were full investigators and held full clearances, with only some clerical staff having entering clearances. The department noted Eisenhower rules allowed 1180 days for thorough checks, and emphasized prompt investigations for those cleared through the entry system.
