Golden Years and the Mallet of Death Tale
A retired man splits his estate among his children and plans to live with each in turn. After his death the strong box reveals pennies and a wooden mallet inscribed with a warning about giving away goods before death. The tale, from Peterson’s Magazine 1863, argues that parents often overgive to children before they die.
