Comptroller Backs Deferral Of Private Plane Costs
Comptroller General Joseph Campbell urged the Defense Department to refuse payment for private aircraft used by contractors. He cited Lockheed Missiles and Space Co stored five company planes with 15 pilots costing 1.029 million, vs 164 thousand for equivalent commercial air travel. He recommended reviewing 1963 and prior years and recovering unwarranted charges, plus tighter scrutiny across services to curb excess aircraft costs. Lockheed defended the practice as time saving and for preventing project delays.
