Doctor defies court order in Karen Quinlan case

Morristown New Jersey Dr Robert Morse testified that despite Karen Quinlans chronic vegetative state and six months on a respirator he would not pull the plug even if a court orders removal. He described her as responsive to pain light and sound and said medical precedent does not support removing life support. The Quinlans seek to let their daughter die with dignity, while Morse and doctors contend she cannot recover and the respirator remains her life-sustaining measure.

Amniocentesis deemed safe and accurate study finds

Government researchers report amniocentesis is safe and effective for detecting fetal diseases without raising miscarriage or birth defect risks. The 1971 to 1979 study of 1034 women shows similar miscarriage rates between those tested and untested, with 35 of 45 affected fetuses aborted.
