The first phase of a hearing on whether Stanford University Maoist Prof. H. Bruce Franklin should be fired ended Wednesday. An advisory board recessed to discuss next steps with counsel for both sides. Franklin testified briefly, insisting he did not heckle former UN ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge and noting a radical group, Vencermos, urged him to protect his faculty position. He is charged with inciting violence at Lodge’s Jan speech and at the campus computer center shutdown the following month. He has been suspended with pay since last spring.
