Combined News Services report a mid morning crash in Quang Ngai Province after an OHG observation helicopter collided with a DEH Huey gunship. Seven Americans died and two were injured. Communists also shot down another U S observation helicopter near An Khe.
Bonn reports Belkacem Krim, 48, a leader of the Algerian revolution and former vice president of the provisional government, was found slain in a Frankfurt InterContinental Hotel room. Police say he was strangled with a belt and tia. Krim had fled Algeria after a falling out with the new government and was sentenced to death in absentia in 1969.
NASA reports two Apollo 12 moon fragments, 13 grams total, sent from Nassau Bay to Lamont-Doherty and a Saudi mission post office, still not received. A postal delay affects scientists at Columbia University and the U.S. Geological Survey, with delivery unresolved.
Algerian news agency says Dr Timothy Leary, famed LSD advocate, has been granted political asylum in Algeria arriving recently with his wife Rosemary. He plans to work with Algiers office of the Black Panther party led by Eldridge Cleaver. Leary faces multiple U.S. prison terms and his escape is linked to Weather Underground aid.
Secretary of Commerce Maurice Stans shelved his 45 minute home movie on Africa following complaints by African American readers and a public showing that drew anger over terms like boys natives. He promised to withdraw the film from further exhibition during his remaining government service after a letter from Ethyl Payne. Simeon Booker noted the episode harming the GOP image despite Nixon's interest in Africa.
