Churchmen threaten to quit Chavez over Philippines trip
Major church groups threatened to withdraw support for Cesar Chavez and the UFW over his Philippines visit to meet Ferdinand Marcos. They criticized Marcos’ martial law and urged Chavez to defend human rights, arguing the trip undermined dissidents and labor rights while Chavez praised the decision to hold elections.
