Royal Visit Opens Capital With Pageantry and Dignity
Elizabeth and Philip arrived in Washington to a 21 gun salute as crowds greeted the Queen and Prince. The White House dinner featured pale green satin gowns, a blush pink dress for Mrs. Eisenhower, and music by the Red-Coated Marine Band Orchestra and Fred Waring. They returned in a ceremonial procession, weather dampened by rain, then laid laurel wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and in Canada’s cross memorial at Arlington Cemetery.
