Solons Ponder Freeway Helicopters and Call Boxes
California lawmakers debated emergency call box usefulness on Los Angeles area freeways and the cost of a helicopter ambulance service. Emerson Rhyner proposed enlarging 80 call boxes on Harbor Hollywood and Santa Ana freeways with clearer signs. Calls from call boxes rose to 1740 in 1964 to date, versus 1600 the prior year, at a maintenance cost of 7.50 per call. Bob Boardman urged a 380000 annual subsidy for a Medicopter service to evacuate accident victims. Donovan urged refining cost analysis before presenting a bill in Sacramento.
