Westside property owners renew efforts to halt redevelopment after a former city planner Robert Case faced charges in Long Beach Superior Court. They filed new evidence including a 194 memo from another planner to support reopening the case. Planning officials declined comment as Oct 28 arguments loom.
Senator Robert Dole of Kansas and Senator Walter Mondale of Minnesota arrive in Houston for a live televised vice presidential debate at Alley Theater. The 75 minute event starts at 6 30 pm PDT with opening statements and extended rebuttal time. Moderation by James Hoge. panelists include Marilyn Berger Hal Bruns and Walter Mears. Weather parts: low clouds, clearing, highs upper 70s, lows around 60.
President Ford charged Carter with slandering the United States by criticizing foreign policy during a nationally televised news conference. Carter said his criticism of the administration does not amount to condemning the country and hinted at possible equal time on TV to respond.
Washington Prosecutor Charles Ruff closed the three month Watergate probe into President Ford clearing him of misusing political contributions during his Michigan years as a congressman. A separate Dean Patman inquiry looms with Democratic lawmakers pressing for action and Ford denying White House involvement.
A mass survey places Carter in a solid lead while Congress shows widespread opposition to Patman leading any probe. Bull states no evidence supports Ford campaign-finance allegations and that an FBI informant's claim about contributions from two maritime unions to Republican committees aimed at Ford's personal use lacked corroboration.
Betty L. Russell 28 manager at Beverly Hills Federal Savings and Loan reported to Torrance and Inglewood police that two masked bandits abducted her after she arrived home. They forced her to drive to her office, opened the vault, took $52,000, blindfolded her, and left her in a Los Angeles area location before seeking help with FBI involvement.
