A Long Beach port official inquiry found that the port’s glowing report closely copied elements from Sohio’s economic analysis. The port denies using Shin’s figures as official estimates and notes the coincidence includes verbatim sentences from Sohio’s file.
Ventura County district attorney probes more than 100 Camarillo State Hospital deaths over three years with possible manslaughter charges. Meanwhile Assemblyman Art Torres seeks investigation into patient abuse at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk amid reports of drug dispensing, neglect, and staff misconduct. Investigators review records and interview staff as health officials had previously looked for gross abuse without findings.
The Daily Telegraph reports Chiang Ching Mao’s widow and three Politburo members were arrested in Beijing on coup plot charges. Names include Wang Hung-wen Chang Chun-chiao and Yao Wen-yuan. Telegraph notes weak army backing and Hua Kuo-feng’s rise amid purges.
A Caravelle jet bound for Madras crashed near Bombay Ceuz airport after engine trouble. Pilot Capt Gupta tried to return to land as flames engulfed the craft. Most victims were Indian passengers. six crew members included two air hostesses. Officials said the disaster followed a prior engine problem on a replacement aircraft. The last major Indian air disaster was in New Delhi in 1973.
President Ford meets Republican leaders to rebuke what they call demagoguery and distortions. Carter calls rumors of extramarital affairs seamy and baseless, while aides deny spreading such claims.
