Oceano hosts a booming dune buggy scene led by stars and enthusiasts. Bill Wellington notes the crowd while Brando and Sinatra join the spectacle. The Nipomo dunes, dubbed the Jolly Green Giant's Sandbox, attract tens of thousands for Labor Day and the Fourth of July.
Buggies race through sand traps using 50 degree dunes in Oceano with homemade VW powered frames and high end models at 2500 dollars. Vehicles ride on 30 inch tires with three to four psi, 12 foot whips and mast lights for night runs while authorities monitor dune traffic. Some residents view duners as privacy invaders despite state rangers and sheriff deputies patrolling in dune buggies with sirens.
