Engle Warns Democrats Against Overconfidence Rally Address
Rep Clair Engle urged California Democrats to avoid overconfidence at a Long Beach rally, warning that waiting for Republican division to settle the 1958 Knowland race could cost victories. He attacked tight money policy as inflationary and harmful to housing, farming, and small business, signaling a Senate bid if supported. The event kicked off a broad 1958 fundraising drive with door to door canvassing led by Joe Kenrick and Tom Griffin, following an honor visit to the Simpson home on 2nd Street.
