Cabby Targeted Again as Robber Strikes in Long Beach
Long Beach cab driver John J. Watkins, 48, was choked and robbed by a passenger who pinned him with an iron bar and demanded money. Six weeks earlier Watkins survived a strangling attempt. Police pursue the same assailant who also menaced Herman J. Jones, 53, in a separate incident.

Assault on Ocean Blvd. ends in rescue of officer
Near Ocean Boulevard last August a cab assault prompted two police officers to intervene. Air Force T. Sgt. Watkins was strangled with a cord and saved by Eugene Tadlock and Lawrence Lee who pulled him free, revived him, and alerted authorities at the Long Beach base. The suspect, a 29 year old, was held on a charge of assault with intent to commit robbery after the cab took off. a companion fled to a nearby car. DeVries released Kleinschmidt to authorities.
