Gary Askew, 19, pleaded innocent to two counts of attempted murder in the shooting of two deputy sheriffs last month in Hawthorne Nevada. Judge Kenneth Mann set November 2 for trial and bail remained at $25,000. Askew had earlier been arrested on a federal charge of transporting a stolen motorcycle across state lines and failed to appear in Reno court, prompting a bench warrant. The incident left Deputy Tompkins with leg injuries as the deputies stopped a car with two companions on September 17 near Babbit.
