California assembly clears bill for $6 billion school finance plan
Sacramento lawmakers advance a massive education finance package aimed at equalizing spending across districts. The plan by Assemblyman Leroy Greene would levy a uniform $3.50 statewide property tax per $100 of assessed value, phased in over three years, with funds redistributed by pupil count to local districts. It seeks to satisfy a state Supreme Court ruling that current financing is unconstitutional.
