Reagan to Trigger State Water Project Today
Gov. Ronald Reagan will start the 685 mile State Water Project by pressing a button at the Edmonston Pumping Plant. The Tehachapi pumps will lift water nearly 2000 feet and begin flowing at 160000 gallons per minute. First Northern California water will reach Southern reservoirs by December with eventual delivery of five million gallons per minute. The project, forecast to cost about 28 billion dollars, has spurred political controversy over who benefits and how future water rights will be allocated.
