Satellite Moonlike Gift Elevates Space Race Tension
The 23 inch diameter satellite launched by the Soviet Union in October is described as a sphere weighing about 184 pounds. It orbits the earth at up to 560 miles with two radio transmitters sending signals at 20.005 and 40.002 megacycles. Moscow indicates more satellites will follow and that artificial earth satellites will pave the way for space travel. American scientists hope to learn about the weather and solar mysteries from the IGY project. The United States plans its own satellite tests and acknowledges a possible launch in the near term.

Long Beach Hams Try to Contact Moon Satellite
Long Beach radio amateurs attempted to receive signals from the Russian launched satellite as Dwight Williams, president of the Association of Radio Amateurs, noted the ham group hopes for any future messages but expects no real reception for a long time. He said signals would likely be vertical polarization impulses and that a ham would catch one every 90 to 95 minutes as the satellite orbits, with identification only possible when messages arrive.
