New Breed Lifeguards Safeguard California Beaches
Lifeguards have transformed from beachboys to professionals as 3.5 million bathers hit 14 miles of San Diego beaches. Despite improved methods, 12 drownings occurred this year, with seven where guards were off duty and six in February. Lifeguards now wear uniforms, use radios and motorboats, and undergo rigorous training and annual refreshers. They work closely with police and the Coast Guard to manage rising beach attendance and emphasize warnings to prevent drownings.
