Cambodian army troops ambushed a Communist river convoy about 12 miles northeast of Phnom Penh Monday, sank four boats and killed five men aboard. Reports note two major Communist offensives along Highway 7 and 4, described as the biggest since July.
Starving survivors in East Pakistan mobbed American relief helicopters carrying food. Two refugees were injured by rotor blades, a third person was shot as the crowd fought for sacks of rice. Ambassador Joseph Parian sought temporary refuge behind a chopper to avoid the crowd at a distribution line as millions faced weeks without aid after the disaster and tidal waves left at least 15 dead.
General Motors after a 10 week strike raises 1971 model suggested retail prices by about 24 dollars on average, effective immediately. The move follows a prior 139 dollar or 4 percent increase in September as Ford and Chrysler also announced tentative rises.
The Louisiana Supreme Court removed Edward Haggerty Jr from his criminal district court post for willful misconduct. Accused of drinking gambling and consorting with bookies, he had presided over the Clay Shaw Kennedy plot trial and faced obscenity and prostitution charges from a Dec. 17 motel party. The judiciary commission said his conduct brought disgrace and public loss of confidence.
Interior Secretary Walter Hickel reiterates he will not resign from the Nixon Cabinet unless the President dismisses him. He tells Mike Wallace on CBS 60 Minutes that leaving would feel like an arrow in the heart, not a bullet in the back, and notes the President asked him to take the post.
