Bombers Aid Infantry in Northwest Saigon Battlefield

Reports describe clashes 60 to 93 miles northwest of Saigon involving American forces and South Vietnamese units. In separate incidents six soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division were killed and eight wounded, four infantrymen died with seven injured, and a brief two hour clash near Ru Prang left 20 North Vietnamese casualties.

War Toll Tops 700,000 in Vietnam Conflict

The combined U.S. and Vietnamese casualties exceeded 700,000 after nine years of war. American deaths last week reached 119 with 643 wounded, the highest weekly toll in nearly two months. Vietnamese losses totaled 497 killed and 1,310 wounded, the heaviest in nine weeks, as allied forces reported 309 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed.

Government troops recovered 87 bodies from the Nigerian Airways crash near Lagos after the Bri tish-built VCS jetnose dived into dense jungle. There were no survivors. The pilot reported approaching Theja Airport but disappeared in foggy conditions.

Kennedys Bury Their Father In Private Services

The Kennedy family held private services for Joseph P Kennedy who died of a heart attack at age 81. Burial was in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline. Rose Kennedy and Edward Kennedy attended with Jacqueline Onassis and her children. Cardinal Cushing officiated the requiem mass as Robert F Kennedy’s tribute passages were read. Also in attendance were John and Robert Kennedy, other relatives, and the Kennedy circle. Governor Lester Maddox filed suit to challenge Georgia’s term limits, arguing it denies due process by preventing his bid for re election.
