Brakeman Saves Airman as Streamliner Collides Near El Toro
A Mac rine Corps fighter jet crashed on a railroad track near El Toro Air Station after a flameout. Pilot Lt Phillip Schmidt ejected moments before a Santa Fe streamliner derailed, but brakeman Pat Schamber pulled the airman to safety and away from the wreckage as the jet exploded. Fire crews battled flames with two damaged engines and five cars derailed.

Refinery Welder Killed by Blast
A welder, Eugene Huckabee aged 43 of La Salle Street Juena Park, was killed at the Associated Oil Co Refinery in Signal Hill when his torch ignited fumes blowing off the tank top. He was thrown from the 15 foot tank and died minutes after at Community Hospital. A second worker, James T. Moore aged 62 of Watts, suffered back injuries and was hospitalized.
