Plan to suspend farm welfare aid ends January first
A state program allowing farm workers to draw welfare year round will be suspended January 1. The move could save about $2 million in welfare costs the first year. Opposed by county officials in the San Joaquin Valley, the plan had kept families eligible for aid during peak harvests. The change requires workers to reapply after prolonged unemployment.
