Hudson County New Jersey political veteran John Kenny and Jersey City Mayor Thomas Whelan head a 12 person federal indictment on two conspiracy counts and 32 extortion counts for work with Hudson County and Jersey City. Kenny and Whelan face separate income tax charges as well. The group was ordered to surrender by 10 a.m. for a hearing.
Winthrop Rockefeller, 24 year old son of Arkansas governor, is rusticated from Oxford University for failing his first year English exam. The London Daily Express noted he was suspended from Pembroke College where he studied English and that he may be permitted to return after a second English exam near summer.
Bob Hope announced plans to depart on December 44 for his 20th annual tour entertaining troops at bases around the world. The itinerary covers England, West Germany, the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea and Alaska with singers Lola Falana Bobbi Martin and Gloria Loring joining him. Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds will travel, along with 14 Goldiggers from Dean Martin's show.
Cardinal John Dearden of Detroit president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops called it an almost incredible scandal that a fabulously rich nation has 44 million people too poor to have full human lives.
