Catholic bishops debate priestly laicization and marriage crisis
At a five day National Conference of Catholic Bishops session in Washington 220 prelates wrestled with laicization reforms as more priests leave for marriage. A seven member committee drafted a new pastoral letter on human dignity and birth control while Wright led a secret ballot to gauge consensus. The conference warned the rising number of priests marrying poses a serious problem and called for reform of delaying procedures in Rome and local bishop actions.
