Calif traffic up to 1973 levels with fewer highway deaths

California highway patrol reports traffic volume has returned to 1973 levels while deaths decline. October fatalities totaled 367, down from 465 in 1973 but up from 359 in October 1974. For January through October, deaths are 3,489 in 1975, 3,252 in 1974, and 4,158 in 1973. Commissioner Glen Craig notes 1973 as baseline due to 55 mph limit and shortages.

California Road Dept Delays 800 State Layoffs

About 800 state employees face layoffs due to highway construction slowdown but receive a reprieve extending their effective date to December 31. Department head Sid McCausland says the extra time aids job searches while plans remain to cut staff by at least 2,800 by July 1. The extension does not guarantee longer notices for future layoffs.

State probes $100000-plus Medi-Cal doctors

The state investigates 59 doctors paid at least $100,000 in 1974 for Medi-Cal treatment of the poor. A Los Angeles physician, C. C. Dotson, received $348,387, while others earned six figures. Investigators say probes respond to patient complaints and review each doctor’s practice. Dr. Howard Daniel of Oakland notes heavy Medi-Cal caseloads and says audits are rare.
