Downey surgeon Dr. Abraham Allen Witlin, 47, shot his wife Marilyn June Witlin, 43, then killed himself in their bedroom on Raviller Drive. Officers said the couple’s children watched TV downstairs as divorce papers lay scattered on the bed.

Bobby Seale national Black Panther Party leader is sentenced by Judge Julius Hoffman to four years in prison for 16 counts of contempt during the 1969 Chicago trial of Panthers and seven others on riot and conspiracy charges linked to the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The judge also declares a mistrial for Seale and sets April 23 for a new trial. Seale is jailed on a New Haven murder warrant.
Three U S prisoners freed by the Viet Cong walked into a South Vietnamese outpost near Tam Ky. They were identified as Spec 4 Willie A Watkins Spec 4 James R Strickland and Pfc Coy R Tinsley all 22. They were taken to Long Binh Army Hospital for tests with malaria possible but return to the U S likely in days if tests negative.
