Sen John Tunney faced a tight battle with Republican S I Hayakawa as vote counting showed Hayakawa leading by about 1500 in late counts. Tunney's strong San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley support faced criticism over spending and policy shifts.
First term Democrat Mark Hannaford appears headed to reelection as incomplete tallies show a slim lead over Republican Dan Lungren in Long Beach and West Orange County. An estimated 5 point margin in Los Angeles County drives the projection, with Orange County results still uncertain.
Long Beach voters narrowly backed Prop X to establish district representation at the city council. With 240 of 484 precincts reporting, 33,614 yes votes 51.21 percent compared with 32,020 no 48.78 percent. Absentee ballots initially favored Prop X with 60.1 percent but later returns narrowed the margin.
State Sen George Beukmejian of Long Beach appeared headed for easy re election in the new 1st Senate District Tuesday night overcoming a 2 to 1 party gap and Renee Simons bid amid labor issue clashes. Deukmejian weathered endorsements from police and fire groups that supported Simon and argued their defection reflected concerns over public employee bargaining. He framed the switch as driven by labor issues and highlighted his stance against collective bargaining for public workers.
County voters rejected a proposed elected county mayor and a plan to expand the Board of Supervisors from five to nine. A separate bond issue for a cancer hospital and research center was also defeated, while a low‑cost housing proposal for seniors drew strong support in unincorporated areas.
Prop 14 lost by a 62 to 38 percent margin as of early counts with 7,832 of 24,400 precincts reporting. Cesar Chavez and United Farm Workers faced a repudiation, while Gov. Brown and supporters argued it would restore the farm labor law via initiative status. Opponents cited an access rule allowing union entry to farms, violating grower property rights.
Democrats clinch control of Senate and House as Carter rises from political wilderness to become the 39th U.S. president. With 86 percent of precincts tallied, Carter led 272 electoral votes to Ford's 196 as Wisconsin and Mississippi pushed him past the threshold. Virginia flipped to Ford.
Jimmy Carter held a slim edge over Ford in California early Wednesday with 52 percent of the vote counted. Carter turned a Ford lead from suburban and rural precincts into a 73,017 vote gap as results from Los Angeles and San Francisco added to Carter’s total.
