Maiden voyage for SS President Lincoln cargo liner
The SS President Lincoln, America’s fastest and largest cargo liner, arrives in Wilmington for its maiden voyage to Japan after a three day Los Angeles port stay. The Sea Racer type vessel, 563 feet long and costing 16 million, will demonstrate cargo handling to officials. It can carry 46 vans, 500 tons general cargo, and 1300 tons alfalfa pellets, using an 80 ton gantry crane. Officials say the new ship will boost California’s economy by about 2 million annually with 500 thousand spent on port handling.
