A Liberian freighter Oriental Warrior burned off Florida’s Atlantic coast as oil poured from the vessel. All 100 aboard were rescued by a passing cargo ship with no injuries reported. Separately in Dallas a hijack surrender ended after the kidnapper released a hostage in the police chief’s office.
In Blantyre Malawi two hijackers from a South Africa Airways jet remain inside an immobilized Boeing 727 at Chileka Airport. They demand an unspecified cash sum plus another plate while nine hostages, five passengers and four crew, were released or slipped away earlier. The aircraft sits stranded with flat tires as guards surround the plane after the mid day flight from Salisbury to Johannesburg. The hijackers’ motive appears not political. Meanwhile in Belfast the IRA provisional wing warned against yielding to peace protest demands as Londonderry women’s committee meets IRA officials. Spokesperson Mary Barr says officials hope to meet the militants on Saturday.
An explosion exploded in the restrooms of a LAN-Chile Boeing 727 en route from Panama to Miami, forcing an emergency landing in Montego Bay Jamaica. No injuries were reported. The blast damaged ceiling sections and the rear toilet area.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police and U S sources confirm Arthur Bremer was in Ottawa during President Nixon's visit and captured in a crowd photo on Parliament Hill. He stayed at the Lord Elgin Hotel and border checks were reviewed as part of the inquiry. Bremer faces federal charges in Maryland and a July trial date was tentatively set.
Officer Obie Stockbridge Massachusetts police chief William Obenheim sought his son after a Berkshire County house of correction work release escape. The younger Obenheim, serving two years for aiding a prison escape last year, was reported missing Wednesday.
ITV lobbyist Dita Beard, who collapsed with heart trouble during a Senate inquiry into donations to the Republican party, will leave Denver for an extended rest June 1. Her physician said she will take a sabbatical, noting she may not go to Washington.
Acting Atty Gen Richard Kleindienst said on Thursday he is willing to take a lie detector test to show he had no knowledge of any deal between International Telephone and Telegraph and the Republican party. He said he would not mention names and joked about others taking tests as well.
Vice President Spiro Agnew labeled critics of the Nixon Vietnam policy as immoral during a New York luncheon where he was named National Father of the Year. He accused supporters of the new morality of biased judgments, stating they condemn U.S. participation but overlook enemy aggression. Also honored were NFL quarterback Roger Staubach and Doc Severinsen.
Louis Cirillo described as a simple Bronx bagel baker was sentenced to 25 years by Judge Edward Weinfeld after prosecutors labeled him the key figure in a 293 million dollar international drug smuggling ring. U S attorney Whitney North Seymour highlighted Cirillo's 31 year criminal record. In other news, Fess Parker plans a 25 million dollar frontier style amusement park on San Francisco Bay, opening by spring 1975.
A would be robber confronted clerk Donald Wiese in Tucson on a Wednesday. The bandit demanded money but lacked a gun and faced a calm refusal. The clerks explained the register held little cash, and warned that twenty dollars could mean about 25 years in jail. The bandit, defeated, walked away.
