Small Cyclotrons Seen Expanding Medical Frontier
Long Beach hosted a two day symposium on nuclear medicine where Dr Ter Pogossian of Washington University described small cyclotrons as built for medicine only. He noted their advantage in producing short lived radioactive compounds on site for diagnostics, with examples Oxygen 15 Carbon 12 and Nitrogen 13. Dr West of London discussed breath hold lung studies using Oxygen 15 and a scintillation counter to detect abnormalities while Dr King of Virginia highlighted links between cancer and immunity.
