President Eisenhower rejected House Democrats' push for tax reductions, saying cuts possible only with disciplined budgeting and sustained growth. He ruled out deficit spending and said debt payments would continue, while defense and foreign aid remain central to policy.
SACRAMENTO Gov. Goodwin J Knight Friday argued into law a bill by Assemblyman Louis Francis providing a mandatory jail sentence of at least five days for any person convicted twice of drunk driving. The measure also sets fines from 3250 to 1000 in error. the bill begins Sept. The Francis bill does not alter felony penalties. Knight also signed a separate bill making it a misdemeanor to refuse to give up a party to an emergency call. A key vote earlier stalled in the Assembly with a debate to resume Monday.
Former French premier Rene Pleven accepted a mission to sound out parliamentary support for a new government after Guy Mollet’s no confidence vote toppled the Socialist cabinet. President Rene Coty named Pleven as premier designate pending majority backing in the Chamber of Deputies as Washington trip is canceled.
Chiang Kai-shek ordered 33,000 troops into Taipei to end anti American rioting that damaged the U S Embassy and injured 13 Americans. Rioters stormed the embassy compound and the U S Information Agency building while attacking the U S communications center. The violence followed the death of an American soldier in a court martial trial. Martial law was declared after rioters besieged police headquarters and requested prisoner releases.
The country imports more foreign cars than it exports for the first time in history. Foreign cars may account for over 3 percent of U S auto sales this year, up from six-tenths of one percent three years ago. Sales rose from 22 000 in 1954 to an estimated 184 000 in 1957, while foreign models take a growing share of export business.
A tornado struck Willow Springs resort at Lake Texoma just before noon Friday. Witnesses reported a five inch rain accompanying the storm and said about 20 boats and boathouses were destroyed. No injuries were reported.
In Chillan Chile an interurban bus veered from the road due to defective steering gear and plunged about 100 feet into the Chillan River killing 25 and injuring 60 others. The crash occurred Friday as emergency crews began rescue and recovery efforts along the riverbank.
At Douglas Aircraft plant tool designer William T Talbot 21 of 3120 Mariquita St developed measles just before his wedding to Miss Grayce Louise James 19 of 1126 Rose Ave. In the dispensary he learns of the fever and a doctor warns him to stay away from people as preparations for the ceremony in Fhat Baptist Church are postponed. Miss James reacts with tears and the couple faces a two week delay.
In Downey Friday night a home made bomb exploded in the front seat of a car carrying three high school boys on Firestone Blvd. Ronald Rex of Parrot Ave was injured in stomach face and hands and taken to St Francis Hospital Lynwood. The other two youths escaped with minor injuries. Police planned to hold the boys for possession of explosives.
The Reader's Digest announced Friday it will raise newsstand price from 25 to 35 cents and increase the annual subscription from 40 to 40 dollars starting September 1958. The change affects readers in Pleasantville, N Y and reflects a broad price uptick for the publication.
Long Beach city council members moved to amend a state bill creating a subsidence abatement district after protests from Los Angeles officials. The major change would exclude over 80 percent of Los Angeles within the current boundary while Long Beach areas stay. A second special meeting was set for 9 am today to decide, with Navy positions likely guiding the final decision.

Civil Defense, police, and volunteers aided Weather Bureau radar tracking as devastation spread across rural areas and towns.
Charles A. Pena of Gardena received a $2,000 judgment in Los Angeles Superior Court for back injuries from a Nov. 24, 1954, traffic crash on Lakewood Boulevard near Firestone Boulevard in Gardena. The defendant was Willan Cliden of Downey, with Pena represented by attorney Russ of Gardena.
