Mondale says US must purge moral blemish on South Africa policy

Vice President Mondale, traveling from Yugoslavia to London, urged that the United States has cleansed itself of a moral blemish by condemning South Africa s apartheid policies this week. He warned calculations of pressure or sanctions should aim to spur reform without provoking a bloody racial war, and he cited Vienna talks as boosting hopes for a peaceful transition in Rhodesia and an acceptable path for South West Africa. Mondale stressed that American ideals cannot be upheld by tactical silence, and said the United States must engage credibly to win African leaders and black publics over to nonviolent reforms. He admitted uncertainty about Vorster s response and tempered expectations for concrete results.
