At a Moscow party meeting Khrushchev vowed to wash capitalism from the earth. The piece warns Americans against apathy, cites a survey on profit expectations, and argues freedom in work vs government control, urging defense of the capitalist system.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee recommended a 4.662 billion dollar program of military and economic aid abroad for the next fiscal year. The bill passed 14 to 3 with three senators voting no. The panel trimmed Kennedy’s request by about 2165 million and cut defense-pact ally support to 400 million this year. It funds 600 million annually for the Alliance for Progress over four years.
Sacramento Assemblyman Charles E. Chapel, 57, Republican from Palos Verdes Estates, was fined $600 and given a suspended two month jail term after being convicted by a jury of falsely reporting an explosive on an airliner as a joke. The sentence makes the charge a misdemeanor and preserves his eligibility for public office.
Tab Hunter, linked to an Beverly Hills import firm, was cleared by Treasury agents who found purchases legal except for a few paintings of Communist Chinese origin bought in Japan. No charges were filed. Minskoff called Hunter cooperative and not willfully violating the law.
