Hartke Attacks Pentagon Over Poison Gas Rail Shipment
Sen. Vance Hartke accused the Pentagon of moving a World War I phosgene rail car shipment from the Rocky Mountain Arsenal to unknown destination possibly toward New Jersey for dumping into the Atlantic. The Army began unloading 170 obsolete gas cars in Colorado while seeking safer disposal methods and faced Senate criticism over plans to dispose of 27 000 tons of nerve and mustard gas off New Jersey.

Surgeon General William H. Stewart told a House subcommittee the Utah desert chemical tests release clouds that may drift but become harmless before reaching populated areas. He said he is convinced they pose no public danger under guidelines drafted last year, despite concerns about VX nerve gas reaching beyond the two mile test grid.
