Colombia fights Marquetalia rebels in rural siege
Colombia's army vows to free peasants from the Communist led independent republic of Marquetalia. General Ruiz Nova labels the area a second Sierra Maestra, with rebel commander Tito Fijo and Isauro Yosa directing a 300 man force across 10 000 coffee camps in To- Tama and Huila. The government faces sympathetic support for the guerrillas from parts of the nation as it launches a peaceful program to reintegrate peasants.
