Nuclear energy bills gain new support in California
In Sacramento legislative proposals as an alternative to Proposition 15 win support from Sen. Alfred Alquist D San Jose who will preside as Assemblyman Charles Warren D Los Angeles presents three bills to the Senate Committee on Public Utilities Transit and Energy. The compromise amendment curbs the grandfathering demand from Los Angeles and allows Energy Commission approvals to stand unless the Legislature acts to reject them. The bills move amid opposition from Nate Holden and others who fear Proposition 15’s two thirds vote and other provisions could throttle nuclear plant construction in California.

Senate Defeats Brown Court Reform Plan in Senate
Sacramento AP Gov Brown’s court reform bill and a constitutional amendment were killed by the Senate Finance Committee with only three votes in favor. The measure would raise retirement age for judges to 70, pause raises for most judges, raise Municipal Court pay, and later grant up to five percent annual increases to all judges. It would also consolidate county, municipal, and superior courts into a two-division system to boost efficiency. Also, a measure allowing community college students to vote on mandatory student fees, up to ten dollars, won Assembly approval to fund activities and work study programs.
