Scripps Ship Set to Drill for Ocean Treasures
The Glomar Challenger, a 400 foot Scripps Institute vessel, sails June 15 on an 18 month voyage across the Atlantic and Pacific to core deep sediments for clues to oil fields and rare metals. With 75 scientists aboard, the project aims to map ocean history and test sea-floor spreading while avoiding oil as a primary goal.
