Senior citizens in Long Beach rely on cheap recreation and aid
A Sunset Club survey finds about 15,624 residents over 65 receive old-age assistance, 36 percent of seniors. Average annual income is $1,300, with 5.5 percent just meeting ends. Leisure programs by Sunset Club and Jewish Community Center aim to fill free time, while transportation remains the main hurdle. Volunteers at the Center coordinate weekly activities, report progress, and consider buses to ease travel for seniors.
