A Southern Pacific freight train carrying 61 tons of cannon powder burst into flames three miles south of Palmdale. Firemen said the blaze could not be extinguished as ammunition exploded. a two mile by two mile area was evacuated and major highways into the desert town were blocked. No homes were within a mile and no immediate danger to life or property was reported.
