Orange County Assessor Asked to Suspend Amid Indictments
The Orange County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday demanded County Assessor Jack P. Vallerga suspend himself from duty pending settlement of indictments against him and top office staff. The move followed an executive session where County Counsel Adrian Kuyper and Administrative Officer Robert E. Thomas complained Vallerga refused to provide information.

Off-Duty Officer Shoots Purse Thief in Long Beach
An off duty Los Angeles policeman wounded a teenage purse thief at noon Tuesday after he fled with a woman's handbag at 21st Street and Locust Avenue. The youth tossed the purse at the officer, who fired once. the suspect was hit in the lower back and treated at St. Mary Medical Center in good condition. Barry Bluitt, 19, was arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery. another teen escaped. The victim, Marie Garcia, 80, was unharmed.
