Guilty Teachers Reinstated Despite Official Objections
SACRAMENTO UPI The State Board of Education reinstated teaching credentials for two convicted petty thieves after brief suspensions despite Vice President Milton J. Schwartz’s objection that the action violates state law. One case involved $1.59 theft in San Diego, the other $87.93 in San Jose. The board also reinstated a Los Angeles teacher whose credential was revoked in 1962 for lewd conduct after a hearing referee found rehabilitation. A proposal to modify how teacher sanity complaints are handled was postponed to next month.

California Senate approves key curricula bill
SACRAMENTO APS The Senate backed a major education measure 35 to 4 sending it to the Assembly. Authored by Sen George Miller it would shift authority to local boards by reducing mandatory subjects in elementary and secondary schools to foster local flexibility. Miller touted the bill as the most significant California education measure in 50 years while detractors warn it shifts control from the legislature to the State Board of Education. The current code lists 26 mandatory elementary subjects and 23 for secondary schools. Local boards could choose new programs and ideas.
