Oriental actors protest loss of roles to Caucasians
The act of protest is led by Japanese American actress Helen Funai and Chinese actor Keye Luke against Caucasian casting in Oriental parts. They note performers like Luise Rainer, Katharine Hepburn, Marlon Brando, and others have held iconic Oriental roles, while many parts go to white actors. The Japanese American Citizens League protested Columbia Pictures signings for Lost Horizon, and officials said Chang remains the only clearly Oriental role not filled by an Oriental actor. Toshiro Mifune was considered but unavailable due to prior commitment.
