Roosevelt Anxious at Tehran and Yalta Confabs
In a new book the interpreter Arthur Birse portrays President Roosevelt at Tehran in 1943 as eager to balance US and Soviet interests. He notes Roosevelt beamed with kinship toward Churchill and appeared ready to listen to advisors while pressing for subtler handling of Stalin. Birse says Roosevelt looked worn at Yalta in 1945 as Stearns and Byrnes seemed to put words in his mouth.
