Pay Hike in County Sought by Officials

County personnel chief Joan R. James said salary recommendations will go to the Board of Supervisors next Tuesday. They propose increases deemed mandatory to align county pay with prevailing private industry wages, with a major overhaul of the 20 year old pay scale to widen the range and improve accuracy. A public hearing is expected midweek.

Muslim Riot Claim Blues: Police Brutality Alleged

Los Angeles reporters recount testimony in the trial of 14 Black Muslims charged with assaulting police during a riot last year. Troy Augustine testified that officers lined up Muslims against a temple wall and that police brutality sparked the melee in which one man died and several were injured. He described seeing an officer strike Charles Zeno and hearing a bottle break, saying officers ripped Mass clothing and searched congregants for weapons.
