Disruption of a Newark Holy Communion Stirs Church Leaders

A New York disruption of a Sunday service led by black activist James Forman drew mixed church reactions. Riverside Church Pastor Rev. Ernest T Campbell denied Forman’s demands and ended the service after the opening hymn. ABC official Rev. Edwin H. Tuller condemned disruption. Council of Churches head Rev. Dan B. Potter urged opposition to tactics, while Rev. Jon L. Regier warned reparations pose a serious issue. Bishop Horace Donegan criticized the church record on racism yet urged safety if needed.
